Born from extensive research, interviews and travels Anne Applebaum has compiled an amazing work of literature. She makes this dark, sad and trying time in the Russian past come to life in a way that captivates the reader and keeps his attention. She details information from archives and personal interviews in a way that enables the reader to place himself in the mind of the people who lived through this era.

As a Russian speaker, I had a very difficult time deciphering words she used; I had to replay them over multiple times to understand.
